What is the N9 form?
Form N9 is the Acknowledgement of Service form used in civil court claims in England and Wales. It accompanies the Claim Form (N1) and confirms that the defendant has received the proceedings.
It also lets the defendant indicate whether they intend to defend the claim, admit it (in whole or in part), or counterclaim.
You usually have 14 days from receipt of the claim to file the N9, otherwise the claimant may seek a default judgment.
When should you use the N9?
Use this document if you:
- You have received a Claim Form (N1) and need to acknowledge service

UK Form N9: acknowledgement of service in civil claims
Form N9 is the Acknowledgement of Service used in civil court claims in England and Wales. It is sent to a defendant together with the Claim Form (N1) and the Particulars of Claim, and must be returned within 14 days of service.
Our online editor lets you complete the N9 with the defendant's details, the indicated response (intend to defend, admit, counterclaim) and any address for service. Once finalised, you can print the PDF and lodge it at the relevant County Court office.
Filing the N9 in time is critical — failure to do so allows the claimant to apply for a default judgment, which can lead to a CCJ being recorded against the defendant. Always seek legal advice if the claim is significant or complex.
